Straubel, the metals in batteries don’t change or degrade, so the materials from old batteries can be made into new batteries without any tradeoffs in performance or battery life. Many U.S.-based lithium-ion recycling companies report a material recovery rate of 95% to 98%.
More than 6.1 million EVs have been sold in the U.S. as of November 2024. EV sales continue to grow, so demand for battery minerals will continue to rise. While mining alone could meet this demand, recycling can support a large share of these minerals.
