Federal Incentives

Federal Purchase Incentive

BEV and PHEV cars purchased in or after 2010 are eligible for a federal income tax credit of up to $7,500. The credit varies based on the battery used to power the vehicle, and will begin to phase out to 50% of the full credit amount once a manufacturer has reached 200,000 PHEVs and BEVs sold.

Federal Charging Infrastructure Tax Credit

The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act allocates $305 billion in transportation funding until September 2020. Congress is working on a reauthorization bill to provide another five fiscal years of funding once the FAST Act expires. As it stands, the bill has a climate component, which is promising for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Negotiations in Congress are dynamic, but Plug In America is hopeful assuming members can agree on a funding mechanism.
