Plug In America applauds EPA for restoring states’ authority to set vehicle pollution standards
LOS ANGELES—Yesterday, the EPA wisely reversed the previous administration’s decision to rescind California’s ability to implement its Advanced Clean Car (ACC) program, and the decision to prevent what are known as “177 states” to adopt this incredibly valuable regulatory tool in fighting climate change and helping usher in the era of electric transportation.
Once again, and as it has for decades prior, California’s waiver provision in the Clean Air Act gives it the right to enforce stronger emissions standards and gives other states the right to adopt those standards.
In response, Plug In America Executive Director Joel Levin issued the following statement:
“The previous administration made the terrible step of revoking California’s waiver under the Clean Air Act—significantly weakening California’s and other states’ ability to reduce air pollution and to advance far cleaner modes of transportation like electric vehicles. President Biden’s EPA made the right move to help bolster the seventeen states and the District of Columbia who have stepped up to the plate by adopting their own versions of the ACC program. Plug In America will continue to work with new states across the country to grow this list, and to ensure that no state in the union gets left behind in reaping the transformative benefits of having a clean transportation system.”
