Plug In America applauds Biden-Harris administration in supporting state rights to limit vehicle pollution, adding boost to EVs
LOS ANGELES— The Biden-Harris administration announced it will restore states’ authority to set stronger fuel efficiency standards than the federal government, which had been revoked during the Trump administration. This announcement also permits states to adopt the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) program, which requires that automakers sell ZEVs within that state, increasing the number of available electric vehicles (EVs). Plug In America applauds this effort from the administration.
Since the previous administration revoked the authority of states to set their own emissions standards, Plug In America has put out numerous action alerts and gathered petition signatures. The organization has also been active with a lawsuit against the removal of the waiver granted to California to set stricter fuel efficiency standards, which included the ZEV program.
In response to this move by the Biden-Harris administration, Plug In America Executive Director Joel Levin said:
“President Biden is making good on his word to clean up the air pollution from the transportation sector. This reversal of the illegal attack on state authority from the previous administration, coupled with the proposed investment into our electric transportation future with the American Jobs Plan, shows that our president is serious about our clean transportation future.
“Transportation is the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Setting strong fuel efficiency standards is vital to cleaning up the air in our communities, improving public health, and reducing the effects of climate change. This action will also get more Americans into clean electric vehicles, which produce no tailpipe emissions.
“States will once again be permitted to adopt the ZEV program, which is the single most important policy driver for electric vehicles and helps to make EVs more available to consumers. Thank you, President Biden, for this action. What a great way to celebrate Earth Day.”
