Joel Levin Statement on Best Month Ever for Electric Car Sales

World’s leading group for plug-in vehicles
says December’s record sales show a wave of momentum for clean cars

Los Angeles, CA – January 6, 2017 – Plug In America’s Executive Director, Joel Levin, today lauded December’s record-breaking sales* for electric vehicles (EVs), the advocacy group says.

“Car buyers have finally discovered electric cars. December saw sales of nearly 25,000 plug-in cars, a jump of 80% from last December. 2016 sales were up 37% overall from 2015. This is partly from the ground-breaking Chevy Bolt EV and Toyota Prius Prime hitting the market at the end of the year and partly from increased sales across the board for most of the 30 plug-in models now in the market,” said Levin. “We expect the momentum for the EV market to keep growing as more consumers discover that these cars are simply better. They’re more fun to drive, cheaper to fuel, and take very little maintenance,” said Levin.

The lines to test drive the Bolt EV were long, but filled with excitement at last week’s San Diego International Auto Show, PIA staff reported. “I test drove it four times, because I couldn’t get enough of Bolt’s Sport Mode,” said PIA staffer John U’Ren.

“As consumer awareness grows, infrastructure gets built, and car companies invest, improve technology and roll out more models, we believe the transition away from the internal combustion engine is getting closer. And with disastrous air pollution like we’ve seen in China recently, that transition can’t happen soon enough,” Levin concluded.
