LOS ANGELES – This week, members of Congress voted against guidance from the Government Accountability Office and the Senate parliamentarian to use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to repeal longstanding waivers granted by the EPA decades ago to allow California and other states to protect their air quality and public health through the regulation of vehicle pollution.
The California waivers protect human health, drive technological innovation and keep U.S. industry globally competitive. Not only are Congress’s actions unlawful, but if waivers can be subject to the CRA, it will further diminish states’ rights to protect their citizens regarding everything from air quality to Medicaid. This abuse of power, driven by oil and gas interests, will harm the U.S. economy, public health and communities.
