LOS ANGELES – Today, Plug In America, a national nonprofit accelerating the shift to electric vehicles (EVs), released results from its second annual public charging survey. The organization collected responses from more than 1,500 EV drivers in May through June of this year and found public charging satisfaction with quantity, availability, and reliability improved compared to 2024.
About 44 percent of respondents reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the quantity of public charging options near them, an increase from 36 percent of respondents last year. For public charging availability, about 43 percent of respondents said they were satisfied, an increase from 37 percent in 2025. Just under 46 percent of respondents cited satisfaction with public charger reliability, an increase from 38 percent who reported the same level of satisfaction last year.
“These results show we’re moving in the right direction, but there’s still work to do to ensure all EV drivers have access to reliable, welcoming public charging,” said Plug In America executive director Joel Levin. “Addressing charger reliability and expanding amenities at charging locations will be critical to achieving widespread EV adoption.”
Key findings:
- Public charging is getting better. Satisfaction with each element of the public charging experience has gone up since last year’s survey, driven mainly by non-Tesla drivers. EV drivers reported fewer instances of broken or nonfunctional chargers compared to last year.
- Tesla drivers continue to have positive public charging experiences. Tesla still offers the best experience when it comes to public charging, with higher reliability, more chargers at each location, and better placement of charging stations.
- Charging functionality improved in 2025. Fifty-five percent of respondents reported that their charge consistently starts on the first try when using a public charger. Seventy-three percent stated that the power consistently flows until the battery has reached the desired charge level, and 72 percent indicated that the port can be easily disconnected once the charging session has been completed.
- Looking ahead, respondents want greater charger reliability and more amenities at charging sites. Once the basics are taken care of – functioning chargers – people are looking for cleanliness and good lighting. Fewer than half of respondents reported that charging stations are consistently welcoming with good lighting and amenities or are kept clean.
