I’ve been interested in owning an EV since watching ‘Who Killed the Electric Car’ in 2006.
We bought a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid in 2010, but at the time EVs didn’t have the range I needed for my commute. After following EV technology for several years, I realized that the range gets better every year – and so do the choices.
I was so excited to hear about the Chevrolet Volt’s new 2016/17 model. Finally…a plug-in hybrid that 1) had a user selectable “electric only” mode and 2) had enough electric range for my round-trip commute.
I was all set and ready to go until my employer held a mini EV-Expo at my workplace in celebration of Earth Day. Along with e-bicycles, they had a BMW i8, Nissan Leaf and Nissan Soul EV. What?!!?! I didn’t even know Kia made an EV with an EPA range of 95 miles!
I went home and started doing research, and I soon realized that since my family still had our Ford Escape Hybrid…there was no reason not to make the leap to fully electric. No oil changes. No gas to buy. No emissions. I couldn’t find a negative. Plus, with the state and federal tax incentives, it was the same price as a gas-powered Kia Soul.
I took the time to test drive everything available in our state under $40K: Volt, Leaf and Soul. In just over a month, I was driving a 2016 Kia Soul EV.
It’s been a joy to drive – so quiet and the regenerative braking really makes a difference on my hilly commute. Free charging at the Kia dealership, three years of roadside assistance, two free sets of tires (if we have all our service done at the dealership), 10 year warranty on the drivetrain and battery…and the perks just keep adding up. I’ve only been driving it for a month, but we fully expect we’ll be buying out our lease at the end of three years.
