The 2017 i3 is BMW’s first full scale production electric vehicle.  It is a 5-door hatchback built on a carbon fiber body and aluminum chassis.  The i3 is available with two battery sizes: a 22 kWh battery pack, and a new, larger 33 kWh battery pack.  Equipped with the 22 kWh pack, the i3 has a range of 81 miles; with the larger 33 kWh pack, the i3 attains a range of 114 miles (EPA-certified).  The rear-wheel drive i3 uses roughly the same electronics and batteries as the ActiveE.  The BMW i3 also has a gasoline range extension option, adding approximately 90 miles to the range for about $4,000 extra.  With the range extender installed, an i3 equipped with a 22 kWh battery pack has an all-electric range of 72 miles (150 miles total gas+electric), while an i3 equipped with a 33 kWh pack as an all-electric range of 97 miles (180 miles total gas+electric).
