The newest electric offering from BMW, the 530e iPerformance is a luxury mid-sized four-door plug-in hybrid sedan. With a 9.4 kWh battery pack and a 180-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the 530e iPerformance achieves an all-electric range of 16 miles and a total range of 404 miles. The 530e’s electric motor and gasoline engine put out a combined 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Performance figures include a zero to sixty time of 6.1 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 146 mile per hour. The 530e iPerformance is available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive variants. Six drive modes are available: Sport, Comfort, Eco Pro, Auto eDrive, Max eDrive, and Battery Control. The last three are unique to the 530e, and assist the driver with regulating battery usage and driving style. Auto eDrive blends the electric powertrain with the gasoline engine to achieve optimum efficiency. Max eDrive is an electric-only mode that completely turns off the gasoline engine, and uses the battery and electric motor exclusively for 16 miles. Battery Control allows a driver to reserve the battery capacity for a later time, using the gasoline engine to power the vehicle and maintain a constant level of charge. Combined MPGe is rated at 72 MPGe, while the gasoline engine alone attains a 28 MPG combined city/highway rating. On level two charging, the 530e iPerformance will fully recharge in under three hours.
