Training, Tools and Resources for Plug-in Dealers

We want every plug-in buyer to have an exceptional ownership experience – one they can’t wait to share with their friends, family and co-workers. To meet this need Plug In America is launching an exciting new initiative to connect car shoppers considering the switch to an electric alternative with dealers specially trained and equipped to meet their electric driving needs.

The Drive Electric and eStar Qualified EV dealer programs supplement and extend factory training to equip new car dealers with best practice training, tools and support to understand and close electric car customers. Program benefits include:

  • No cost EV training that goes beyond what the factory offers
  • A one-stop website for ALL incentives that can be shared with your EV customers
  • Customer leads from National Drive Electric Week and other promotional events
  • Additional spiffs from sales of home charging equipment and solar systems
  • Featured listings on Plug In America, DriveGreen* and partner sites
  • Recognition for top-performing dealers

We instill sales staff with the confidence to support EV customers while ensuring dealers meet their business objectives.

Our San Diego pilot is already off the ground. We’ve trained over a dozen dealers representing BMW, Ford, GM, Kia, Mercedes-Benz / smart and Nissan. Here’s what some participants have shared:

“Very informative and goes over all the different angles and incentives, etc. for selling an EV.”

“Very helpful information that makes a salesperson credible.”

“The class was great, we’ve used the information to close a few more deals and it’s been very helpful.”

“Presented well. Practical.”

“I would like to see more employees attend.”

Boston will be the second market to pilot this first-of-its kind program to connect car shoppers with qualified EV dealers. Initial EV sales training is set for September 6th – just in time for National Drive Electric Week September 9-16th. Several Boston area communities will host ride and drive events where visitors can experience the thrill of electric driving.

Eligibility

Plug In America invites applications from all licensed and OEM-certified EV dealers in the greater San Diego and Boston metro areas. Dealers applying for enrollment in one of our pilot programs commit to designating at least two seasoned salespeople to serve as EV product specialists and customer advisors or “EV geniuses.” They must also agree to prearranged pricing on the EV models they sell and agree to furnish this information – as well as monthly EV and vehicle sales totals – to Plug In America at the beginning of each calendar month.

Dealer Advisory Council

Our dealer engagement program is backed by data and informed by industry best practice gleaned from Plug In America’s Dealer Advisory Council (DAC), itself comprised of the nation’s top PEV sellers.  The program is further shaped by input from local dealers, utilities, and other stakeholders to meet the needs of particular regions where the program operates.

Heath Carney has 20 years of automotive sales experience in northern California. He has focused on plug-in vehicle sales and marketing since these vehicles came to market in 2010. His main commute car is one of the first 2011 Chevrolet Volts. He trains dealership staff and works with regional utilities (SMUD, Roseville Electric and PG&E), charging manufacturers and installers. His dealership EV webpage helps new owners with special EV needs such as charging and financial incentives. He participates in many regional events with SacEV (Sacramento Electric Auto Association), and he is invited to talk about electric vehicles for many civic, educational and other organizations. His education includes BS (College of William and Mary, Virginia), MS (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), PhD (University of California, Davis), and postdoctoral positions at University of California (Davis, Berkeley), and Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Randall Blaum is the Co-Founder of EVGreen, an automotive consulting company that creates successful sales programs for dealers so that plug-in vehicles may be sold more effectively, efficiently, productively, and profitably in the short- and long-term. EVGreen specializes in enjoyable, very profitable, easy-to-use programs that allow dealers to train local, regional, and national sales teams on how to sell electric cars whilst retaining additional gross and selling more units. The EVGreen training process provides sales consultants a way to absorb information and retain over 80% of that information a year later. Prior to co-founding EVGreen, Randall lead the design and creation of the international advertising and trailer programs for LucasFilm THX and was in the entertainment business for over 25 years.  His marketing, advertising, and sales strategies have been experienced by over five-hundred million people worldwide – using the same strategies within the EVGreen “sustainable profits” process. He has consulted for Fortune 500, 100, and 50 companies like NEC America, Panasonic, and American Express, bringing new, reliable, and sustainable customer-centric ways of prospecting, selling, increasing productivity, customer satisfaction and profitability.  Randall has personally sold over 200 EVs since 2010 and has helped automotive dealer’s sales consultants and sales teams reach and exceed their EV sales goals.

Ray Ishak is a 19 year veteran With Nissan and one of the early adopters of the Nissan Leaf in both sales and individual usage. When Nissan announced the production of the Leaf, Ray and his dealer, Campbell Nissan, realized quickly that a specialized person or team needed to be extensively trained to handle every aspect of EV ownership, not just the initial sale process. He understood  that this product needed a new approach and a key for  success was also to raise awareness by organizing presentation and test drive public  events. This helped him become the top Leaf sales professional in the world for individual sales in 2014 and 2016.  Ray has an extensive knowledge of dealer operations which is crucial in helping understand and overcome obstacles that may arise in the efforts of collaborating, motivating and educating dealers on the benefits of EV sales. Ray just celebrated another milestone where his EV clients have surpassed the one million gallons of fuel saved per year in the Greater Seattle metro area.

Tom Moloughney is a passionate electric-vehicle advocate, industry consultant and former director at Plug In America. He has owned and operated restaurants for 30 years and currently owns a strip mall in New Jersey, where he installed and manages electric vehicle charging stations. Tom has been working directly with BMW dealerships to improve their PEV sales, and assist in BMW i client adviser certification.  He has been driving electric since 2009, and powers his electric cars with clean, renewable energy from his home solar array.
